Others; Green Hairstreak, Purple Hairstreak, Silver-washed Fritillary, Purple Emperor, Chalkhill Blue
(not Devil's Dyke)

Send Sightings by email to (please make sure you enter a subject) and they will appear below within a few days.
Clicking on the link should launch your usual email program.  If this does not seem to work just use the email address.

Please include the date, how many of each butterfly species seen, location with an ordnance survey grid reference if possible, and your name (if you want to).
If you would like to contribute to the annual survey please read the notes on the Recording page.

If you report a Brimstone this record will also be passsed to the Brimstone and Buckthorn project

Regular recorders are urged to use this sightings page to inform others of interesting sightings, but please do continue to send all your records to the county recorder, James Corton, at the end of the season.

Coronavirus - Butterfly Recording

Please follow the latest advice from the government. Follow social distancing rules and wear a mask where necessary.

If visiting Purdis Heath, Pipers Vale and Landseer Park (or any other site for that matter) please keep to footpaths and recognised tracks and do not trample heather, ant nests or any other vegetation.  There are plenty of places where you can see butterflies from the paths.  Keep dogs on a lead.

18 Jul I also spent an hour at Theberton Woods in the mid morning, when one Purple Emperor came down to rotten bananas and secret ingredients prepared by Sam the ranger (many thanks Sam, was nice to meet you and your friends!). I returned again in the mid afternoon and spotted at least 3 male Purple Emperors circuitously and methodically patrolling the canopy edges for females.  (📷 photo click here)  (To justify my numbers: I saw 2 males fighting, and at exactly the same time within 50 yards another male on the opposite side of the clearing above the car park at  TM 42174 65549 on Pretty Road). I saw individual males in the canopy at many points in the woods during my hour long walk, but I have no idea if these were different individuals or the same 3 see previously.  Also of note in the woods (and along adjacent Moat Road) were a single (worn) female White Admiral, many Silver Washed Fritillaries (at least 20, perhaps many more), plus 10+ Purple Hairstreaks. 17 Jul I live in Woodbridge next to Fen Meadow (postcode IP12 4HA). On 17th July at 09:40 there was a single Purple Hairstreak in my garden. Not usually a garden butterfly, but the garden is adjacent to a large oak tree on the boundary of the Fen Meadow open space, which also holds some other oak trees. I have seen Purple Hairstreak in the garden on at least one occasion in each of the last 3 summers. Also on Fen Meadow, I have had my attention drawn to White-Letter Hairstreak by my friend Guy Padfield. The adults fly around the top of the elm trees, though they're difficult to identify and I haven't had a clear view myself this year. In some previous years I have seen individuals at lower height (including a couple of times in my garden). Guy has obtained photos. I tried to put the PH into the big butterfly count but there isn't an option for that. Best regards Woodbridge   David Adelson

16 Jul In addition to the numbers of butterflies (Dark Green Fritillaries, Marbled Whites, Chalk-hill Blues, etc.) which I saw along Devil's Dyke this morning, I noticed the following along the much smaller dyke about fifty or so yards to the east of the main dyke: Dark Green Fritillary 3, Chalk-hill Blue 4, Marbled White 4. The OS map grid is TL614618 and appears to show the county boundary running between this earthwork and the main dyke itself. I am not 100% sure about whether you regard these sightings as part of the main Cambridgeshire populations or whether they do, in fact, occur in Suffolk?  (For recording purposes this is in Cambridgeshire.  Recording counties follow old boundaries to ensure historical comparisons can be made.  The boundary runs NW to SE through the grandstand) Devil's Dyke   Martin Peers

26 Jun I have just had an extraordinary hour in Exning.  Glebe Rise is a new estate and did not look promising last year.  I arrived about 4.00 and was immediately struck by the abundance of flowers and spotted a Six-spot Burnet, then another, then another, and that continued until I gave up at 20.  I have never seen so many.  The butterflies were not all that special but the number of moths I disturbed was.  I think it is well worth a moth specialist visiting. 31 May Species count seems quite low and so do numbers.  However, I'm having frequent sighting of Holly Blue each day, and very frequent sightings of Brimstone males.  Usually only one at a time so the reports (31 & 29 May) probably don't reflect the actual numbers of insects around.  Painted Lady 1, Large White 1 (first sighting this year), Brimstone m 2, Holly Blues 1, Holly Blues 2 looked like a failed mating attempt.  Definitely 1 m 1 f Somerleyton   Sue Cox

29 May SBBC Event - At last! a fine sunny start to the day (Sat 29th May). A troupe of 7 members turned up for this pre- planned field meeting.  Just enjoying the fresh air and sunshine was a pleasure.  In the morning, the whole group saw 8 species - 9 if we count the Green Hairstreaks seen by Trevor before we set off: Orange-tip plentiful, small white, Small Heath, small copper, speckled wood, brimstone (just 1) Peacocks, and a holly blue, plus Green Hairstreak, making a nice tally of 9 for the morning, not counting the single Cinnabar moth.  However, nothing was in abundance, and the forest had a "silent spring" air about it.  After all, May had been an awful month! . In the afternoon, Sandy and Tony Fox moved south in pursuit of Dingy Skippers.  In the vicinity of the Archery club, they encountered two Dingy Skippers, followed, a bit further on, by another two (still in the vicinity of the Archery club. As far as I am aware, this is the first DS sighting of the year. (First sighted by Trevor Goodfellow on 9 & 12 May and Bill Stone on 23 May - SBBC) King's Forest   Rob Parker
