Theberton TM446334 Andrew Leng
7 Sep At 07:05 on the morning of 7th September, there was a blue sky over Bury St Edmunds, and we were delighted to see a Red Admiral alight on the tree outside our bedroom window.  It was still cool, at about 15C, and its wings were opened in a basking posture.  It remained still for about 10 minutes.  Unusual, at that hour. . 16 Aug Whilst surveying a private west Suffolk site this morning I stopped and spoke with one of the site's gamekeepers.  Whilst we were chatting we both saw a large"flappy" butterfly approach us along the track where we were standing.  The butterfly flew past us and then circled the gamekeeper's 4x4 vehicle.  At this point I was able to see it was a Swallowtail.  I tracked it briefly through binoculars noting several features which strongly suggested it was the European race gorganus- very pale yellow, almost white in bright sunlight with the dark markings being finer and less extensive.  The butterfly flew away strongly to the north west.  This is my first ever Suffolk Swallowtail! 11 Aug Jealous of Bill Plumb's sighting of long tailed blue, I popped over to landseer park today.  Warm but no sun although I did see a blue, it could have been anything.  One sighting of a purple hairstreak and after about 90mins the sun shone for a while then a few meadow browns and gatekeepers showed.  A few large whites and this small white.  I did note that one of several large wasp spiders had just caught, what looked like a blue, and was very quickly wrapping it in silk.  Bumped into a fellow BC Suffolk member and talked butterflies for a while.  (photos click here) Landseer Park   Trevor Goodfellow

8 Aug Silver-washed Fritillary  This morning, whilst collecting up my recording equipment from a bat survey I am doing, I as extremely excited to spot a fritillary butterfly. It was very tatty but unmistakeable. True to form I'd left my camera and phone at home so missed the perfect photo opportunity it presented me, by settling on a plant two feet in front of me. After further researching species of fritillary in Suffolk, and being directed to your website, I am assuming it was a Silver Washed Fritillary. I am quite used to the more usual species of butterfly, hence this one stuck out like a sore thumb! I did dash home and head back out with a camera but it was nowhere to be found. 31 Jul I drew a blank (no purple emperors) at theberton wood today as the weather was more like april although someone spotted a Silver-washed Fritillary.  Returned home to Thurston and the sun shone brightly thereafter of course.  I spotted a gatekeeper trapped in a cobweb being cut up by a wasp and a spider trying to defend his meal. (photo click here), there was a lot of movement as you can imagine. Thurston   Trevor Goodfellow

26 July The last two weeks at Theberton Wood have produced good numbers of Purple Emperors, both male and female, including five plus sightings of egg-laying.  Also good numbers of Purple Hairstreaks, Ringlets, Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers, as well as appearances from White Admiral and Silver-Washed Fritillary.  Today, 26th July at 9.00a.m. before the rain arrived we were treated to a female Purple Emperor coming down to feed on the banquet provided (photo click here)) Theberton Wood   Kerry Reeve
Queen of Spain Fritillary (photo click here) was present on Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th July 2015 on some private land within the grounds of Fritton Lake Country Park, and was loyal to a small area of gravel track 300 metres in length.  It could often be found sunning itself on the track, and was frequently watched feeding on the flowers of ragwort.  It would aggressively chase off any other butterfly species present.  Because the site was private i couldn`t publicise the news, and just four people managed to see and photograph it during its two day stay.  I looked for the Queen Of Spain Fritillary on Monday the 20th July, but could not find it, although admittedly the weather was cloudy and windy. 21 Jul Mid morning 21st July - We went to Westleton Heath to look for Graylings and Silver Studded Blues.  Starting at the car park on the Dunwich Road - Graylings were everywhere, too many to count as they flew at almost every step!  Gatekeepers, Meadow Browns also along the path and in the grasses.  In the "horse field" were lots more Graylings, about 4 Small Coppers and we eventually found a single female, tatty, brown and blue butterfly with no particular markings which we assumed was a Silver-studded Blue.  Turning into the archery wood we found a dozen or more Ringlets but not the White Admiral for which my husband was hoping.  Curiously none of the gorse had flowers, will this affect future generations? Westleton Heath TM465700 Geraldine Smith

19 Jul I have a nice clear image of a White-letter Hairstreak  on a thistle head taken today 19th July at Burgh Castle between the parish church and the fort.  I will forward this when uploaded.  Looking at the relevant page in my 1984 edition of Heath, Pollard and Thomas 'Atlas of B'flies In Britain and Ireland' I notice an asterisk denoting a pre-1940 record NW of Lowestoft Ness and thus more or less where Burgh Castle lies.  If it does relate to this site, I wonder whether the population could have existed at a low density undetected in the intervening years.  I have submitted this record to the Norfolk recorder since the south side of Breydon Water and Burgh Castle are now in Norfolk for administrative purposes. Norfolk sighting   Jeremy Gaskell
19 Jul We paid our first visit to Bonny Wood today and we were rewarded with 1 Brimstone (male), 1 Comma, 1 Gatekeeper, 2 Red Admirals, 3 White Admirals, 3 Green-veined Whites, 4 Peacocks and 6 Silver-washed Fritillaries.  There were also good numbers of the commoner species.  Migrant Hawkers were patrolling the rides.   Bonny Wood   Gary & Jenny Plank

18 Jul Saturday 18th dawned bright and promising in the King’s Forest, with an abundance of Skippers all over the Viper’s Bugloss. There were hundreds, mostly Small, but with some Essex, and just a single Large.  Worn Ringlets and Meadow Browns were scuttling all over the verges of Chalk Lane.  In all we saw 10 species, including fresh Small Coppers basking on hot flint pebbles, a couple of Gatekeepers and the 3 Whites.  Everything was very frisky at 23C in the breeze.  If you go to enjoy the activity, note that big chunks of the forest are sectioned off for forest work until the end of August. 29 JUn Some of you know that Blaxhall Common is divided by a road, and that our 2006 translocation of Silver-studded Blues was only on the north side.  We have always considered it to be a possible sign of success for the SSBs to spread from the north side (monitored by the transect) to the south - which also looks like desirable habitat.  In the last 2 years, we have had occasional sightings of singles just across the road.  This morning Bob Turner (one of the Blaxhall volunteers) counted 30 males on the south side - marking a nice little landmark, presuming that breeding will now result in a wider (and natural) colonization.  This year's counts are looking strong, although the numbers have thinned out at the northernmost point on the transect. 28 May Sightings from SBBC Event - NT Bioblitz  It was just as well that there were Green Hairstreak on the flowering hawthorn at the entrance to Heath Barn as they provided immediate interest.  Green Hairstreaks were seen on Gorse elsewhere on the heath but otherwise there were very few butterflies of other species.  Shelter from the cool breeze was the key to finding Peacock(3), Large White (3), GV White(2), Small Heath (2) and single specimens of Holly Blue, Common Blue, Orange-tip and Brimstone.  (I did a couple of official walks on the first day with groups of 12 - 15 people, tricky when there wasn't much to see but the damselflies and antlions kept us amused.) 18 Apr A Scarce Tortoiseshell was seen by Debbie Broom and Nigel Cuming, also Dave Thurlow the Site Warden at RSPB North Warren, along the Railway Track at Aldeburgh – early afternoon around 2.30 pm. by the pool with the Pampas grass where it was seen on the 15th April.   Also reliably reported by somebody else on the 21st April along the Railway Track approximately parallel to Haven House. Aldeburgh   Debbie Broom
15 Apr Scarce Tortoiseshells - It was I along with Robert Turner who saw the Scarce Tortoiseshells at North Warren and reported them to Rare Bird Alert.  They were on the old railway track along the stretch between about level with the end large white house on the coast and the observation hide overlooking the north marsh.  There are sallows along this stretch.  The sighting furthest south was level with the pool with the Pampas grass on the west side of the track.  There were numerous Peacocks along the track with most sitting on the track then at one point I noticed a tortoiseshell sitting on the track ahead with its wings closed and we could see it looked larger than a Small Tortoiseshell with less contrast in the markings on the underside of the wings.  When it opened its wings a little at times the orange on the upperwing was less bright than a Small tortoisehell and the markings were similar to either a Large or Scarce Tortoiseshell.  Realising we needed to see the leg colour we managed to get a view through binoculars of the butterfly head on and could see the forelegs were straw coloured.  It flew up a few times, often when another butterfly flew by, but returned to the track within a few yards of where it had been even after flying a bit of a way along the track.  I thought its hindwing looked slightly ragged at the time.  Further south along the path there was another tortoiseshell with the same behaviour and we assumed it was the same individual and saw the straw coloured forelegs again.  When it opened its wings it looked in excellent condition with no obvious wear and I thought perhaps I had been mistaken thinking it had looked a bit ragged.  Further on again we saw a similar Scarce tortoiseshell (straw coloured forelegs again) with the same behaviour and manner of flight but this one was quite tatty so we realised there were at least two individuals.  Beyond here where the pines are we saw 2 Small Tortoiseshells near some nettles and it was very useful to have the comparison within five minutes, with the Small Tortoiseshells looking obviously smaller than Peacocks when they flew up together and they had a more fluttering quality to their flight than the stronger more direct flight of the Scarce Tortoiseshells, which at times in flight looked quite like a Peacock but when close enough with the angle of light right showed a generally dark orange colour instead of purple.  These observations were made between about 2.15 and 3.00pm.  Other butterflies seen along here were, besides the numerous Peacocks and 2 Small tortoiseshells already mentioned, 1 Comma, a female Orange tip, a Speckled wood, and a male Brimstone (flying alongside one of the Scarce tortoiseshells at one time).  My camera was in my car over a mile away and when I returned with it at about 4pm there were only 3 or 4 Peacocks still out along the track with more shadow across the path.  It was still sunny but less warm by then.  I should think there will be further sightings of the butterflies in the next few days if the sun shines, even if it is much less warm than today was, so I hope others can confirm how many there are and manage to take some photos of them.  Aldeburgh   George Brown

14 Apr Mervyn Crawford mentioned the shortage of good nectar plants on the 7th April.  The ground Ivy seems to be a good early source and very popular in the garden and field at this time of yeart.  Full of bees and butterflies are also using it too.(Photo here)  It can make a nice carpet of blue.  In the sheltered  garden we have Brimstone, Orange tip male and female , Peacocks, Comma and Tortoiseshell.  No point counting as I am sure some are patrolling round and round.  Though we do have two Peacocks getting friendly (photo here     Andrew Leng

7 Apr Several species in our one-acre garden, still devoid of good nectar sources.  Three hibernating Vanessid species (no Red Admiral) were seen, with four Small Tortoiseshells on two or three occasions performing their spiralling courtship flight.  A male Brimstone was seen several times, probably the same insect.  At 12.00 noon my first male Orange Tip appeared (two and a half weeks later than last years ‘first’), soon followed by my first female Holly Blue egg-laying once more and for several minutes on the terminal buds of Lonicera Fragrantissima, never a recognised food-plant.  Later two Speckled Woods put in an appearance together, but I have yet to see my first ‘White’. 8 Mar The morning of Sunday 8th March was just as bright and warm as the forecast had promised.  I saw my first butterfly of 2015 in my Bury St Edmunds garden at 11am with a temperature of 17C; unseasonably warm for early March.  It was a Peacock, and it took a moment to dawn on me that it was probably the one that had spent the winter hibernating in our garage.  A quick check confirmed that it was no longer in the garage, where I had seen it just 48 hours earlier.  This was the very same insect that featured on p.10 of the Spring issue of Suffolk Argus.
