23 Aug Alton Water Event - Fourteen members of BC Suffolk met at Alton Water for the final outdoor event of the year.  Meeting at the Lemons Hill Car Park the group walked the footpath around the conservation area.  Unfortunately, the weather was not great with a brisk westerly wind and intermittent sunny spells.  Despite this we managed to record the following 10 species: Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Small Tortoiseshell, Speckled Wood, Large White, Small White, Comma, Meadow Brown, Common Blue and Brown Argus.  We later moved to the Sailing Club car park and walked back towards Alton Hall Lane.  This failed to produce the sought after Clouded Yellows and with the weather deteriorating only a few species were seen: Meadow Brown, Red Admiral, Large White, Small White and Speckled Wood.  Later it was reported a Small Heath was seen near the carpark.  It also turned out to be a good Odonata day with the following species seen: Common Blue Damselfly, Azure Blue Damselfly, Banded Demoiselle, Willow Emerald Damselfly, Ruddy Darter, Emperor, Southern Hawker, Migrant Hawker and Brown Hawker. 25 Jul I cycled over to the woods at Bradfield St George.  Both woods are quite variable with dark conifer in places but also some much brighter and open areas, but I had to follow the public footpaths.  In total I recorded 5 SWF's - one female in Free Wood and the other 4 (mixed sex) in Mellfield Wood so there is obviously a breeding population around.  Saw no WA's but they may well be over, if extant, this very early season.  On the way home I noticed quite a lot of fairly mature elm which you miss in the car - right by the entrance to Thurston Rugby Club (TL919661).  So I stopped to examine the little bramble still in flower and was rewarded with the attached photo click here (poor quality, sorry, but used my camera 'phone).  I will mark that area for more detailed research next year! Free Wood and Mellfield Wood TL9260 Mike Dean
25 Jul Female Common Blue - blue phase.  Also more "spots" on the top front of the front wing than on any of the examples on ukbutterflies.co.uk (photo click here). Sorry about the quality, the curse of autofocus.  If anyone knows a handy pocked sized digital with manual focus control that was easy to carry around all the time in a shirt pocket I would like to know.  The so called "bridge" cameras are more chunky. seen 25th July Theberton - Eastbridge TM443664 Andrew Leng

20 Jul Just wanted to share with you that whilst carrying out some volunteer work for the RSPB in Hintlesham Wood TM068 428 mid morning on Sunday I counted 6 SWF & a White Admiral on the southern half of the bridle path but on entering Hintlesham (which is not public access) I was absolutely amazed to give up counting the SW Fritillaries after exceeding 30 (and would realistically estimate numbers at 60-100) and saw a further dozen White Admirals.  We own a wood less than a mile away, Brimlin, TM078410 which I visited immediately afterwards and was disappointed to find no SWF’s (last seen here 2 years ago)altho did count 5 WA’s.   The ride in Hintlesham was an area was in full sun on Sunday and the ride was recreated 3-4 years ago after being overgrown since the war. It is now thick with Bramble and a few thistles. In the same area at 18.15pm in partial sunlight yesterday evening I counted 35 SWF along with a dozen WA’s.   The above has been reported to the RSPB wardens. Hintlesham TM068428 Peter Woolley

17 Jul This comment is stimulated by Bill Stones search for the Scarce Tortoiseshell migrant on the 17th.  I did not read about it until Tuesday evening.  I had been away the previous week (though I did see a chalk down slope covered with flowers and butterflies).  On my return, when I looked round here over the weekend and Monday I was impressed how many Tortoiseshells, Red Admirals, Peacocks there were everywhere, especially on the buddleias which have been ignored till then.  Some of the tortoiseshells were very ragged and there were a couple of painted ladies, maybe that should have been a clue.  On Wednesday 16th I went out to inspect the tortoiseshells more closely and found about 4 or 5 at most.  They had moved on?  There must have been 30 or 40 or more previously.  Thursday and Friday there were 3 or 4.  The Red Admiral numbers are down a bit but there seems to be the same number of Peacocks.  Anybody noticed how many tortoiseshell caterpillars there are on the regrowth of nettles especially obvious here where the council has mowed the nettles along the roadsides. Theberton - Eastbridge. TM443664 Andrew Leng
17 Jul I spent the afternoon scouring the Aldeburgh area in the hope that I would find the butterfly of the moment, a Scarce Tortoiseshell.  Sadly, this was not to be but there were good numbers of butterflies seen throughout Aldeburgh and Slaughden.  Several buddleja along the allotment path were heaving with butterflies which was great to see.  Species and numbers seen were- Red Admiral (15), Painted Lady (1 very tatty individual), Peacock (22), Small Tortoiseshell (16), Gatekeeper (150+) Meadow Brown (100+), Ringlet (50+), Large Skipper (10), Comma (5), Purple Hairstreak (2), Large White (34), Green-veined White (45), Small White (18) Aldeburgh Slaughden TM459566 Bill Stone

Ringlets a few, Small tortoiseshells only 4 now but I had to send the picture (here) of one in the nettles.  It was shimmering its wings like jewels.  The nettles have had the most Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell caterpillars that we can remember.  Small Heath and an Argus with unusual white markings (see the picture).  Jane remembered some discussion about the white mark in the Argus, not a very new specimen.  Also  hummingbird hawk moth in the garden Theberton.   Just to encourage others,  I have attached a picture (here) of what is left of a seedling alder buckthorn that had 12+ Brimstone  caterpillars on it.  You don't need big trees to see results (though  a backup branch or two came in useful in feeding the last of the brood)  We caged it this year as the birds got them all last year.)  Maybe it does not look so good reduced for the site. Theberton. Eastbridge  TM444658 Andrew Leng
17 Jun Congratulations Bill, you beat me to the first White Admiral in Wherstead wood this year.  Paid a quick visit this afternoon and saw one White Admiral, two Red Admirals, Ringlet, Comma, 20+ Small Tortoiseshell and a Hornet Moth. Wherstead Woods TM134397 Kev Ling
17 Jun As it was the first really sunny day in many I cycled over to the wood earlier this afternoon to take a look as the season is early.  2 White Admirals in the main clearing, 2 (fresh male) Silver-washed Fritillaries, 1 in the clearing and the other on the sunny southern edge of the wood, 3/4 Ringlet, 12+ Speckled Wood (everywhere), 12+ Meadow Brown (everywhere), 4 Large Skipper, 1 Red Admiral, 2 Small Tortoiseshell, 2 Comma.  I also thought I spied the tell-tale silvery flash of a Purple Hairstreak, but only once, and as there were other butterflies feeding on honeydew in the oaks, I can't be definite on that one!   Seems we need to get out recording earlier than normal this year! Pakenham Wood TL935671 Mike Dean

15 Jun This morning I paid a visit to Wherstead Woods, near Ipswich in the hope of some woodland butterflies.  My visit luckily coincided with a break in the clouds and the sun was able to shine through the woods.  Concentrating on sunlit bramble patches proved a positive move with a single White Admiral seen nectaring along with good numbers of Speckled Woods and Small Tortoiseshells.  Later, watching the top of some honeysuckle in the hope of a visiting White Admiral revealed a single Purple Hairstreak!  It appeared to alight from the Honeysuckle before resting on top of a mature Oak Wherstead Woods TM134397 Bill Stone

13 Jun  I looked again this am at the Hieracium patch and there were only about 3 tortoiseshells at 8.15 and 4 at 8.50. Still a fair number of bees but not so many and such activity as yesterday. I wondered was yesterday's peak due to a migration? I forgot to mention there was a Painted Lady with them yesterday but we see the odd one around recently. Theberton- Eastbridge TM444658 Andrew Leng
12 Jun Clouded Yellow feeding on lesser buglosss.  The question is was it the same one as on the 10th in the other field?  On the subject of sightings: at 08.30 today, just as the cool morning air warmed up in the strong sun.  On an east facing field there were more than 40 Small Tortoiseshells feeding on a small composite in the Hieracium family.  It was covered with bumble bees.  By 9.30 there were less than 20 and at 11.30 I counted 20 and the number of bees had declined as well.  The butterflies were very hard to count as they hopped up and down appearing and vanishing.  It is a dry sandy field and there must be an early nectar flow.  By 2pm the field having looked yellow like a buttercup meadow has no sign of yellow as all the flowers close up tight   Also a Painted Lady. Theberton- Eastbridge TM444658 Andrew Leng

7 Jun "I decided to look for Wall along the Aldeburgh end of the Sailors Path. Despite not seeing a Wall I did see my first Meadow Browns of the year and enjoyed some good counts of Small Heath, Large Skipper and Common Blue. Several Red Admirals were also seen and I had hopes of a Painted Lady. However, whilst watching a Common Blue a flash of yellow flew past me and I was able to identify a Clouded Yellow (photo here) flying away from me. It eventually settled (TM438581) albeit briefly, on some Red Clover giving me time to get a record shot. It soon flew off again heading out of sight towards Hazelwood Marshes. Other butterfly species recorded were Small White, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Speckled Wood. Aldeburgh TM438581 Bill Stone

1 Jun I saw this Wall at Carlton Marshes SWT reserve on sunday June 1st, around 1300h.  Photo here  The weather was warm and sunny and it was sunning itself on bare patches along the southern section of the river Waveney wall section of the circular path around the reserve, about 1km south of Burgh St Peter.  It was a rather faded individual and I wasn't able to ascertain the sex.  Maybe somebody more proficient than me can do that from this rather poor record shot taken on an iPhone? I know that sightings of this species are of particular interest in Suffolk so hopefully my observation is of interest. Regards Carlton Marshes TM503923 Derek Eaton

9 May I finally managed a successful reconnaissance of the Kings Forest today (09 May) ahead of the BC Suffolk Dingy Skipper survey scheduled for Wednesday 14 May.  Previous visits had been washed out by rain and cold temperatures!  Despite the very strong westerly winds and occasional heavy rain shower I was able to spend time exploring the various rides for Dingy Skippers.  Thankfully, my luck was in and at least 12 Dingy Skippers (photo here) were found over two tetrads (TL8373 and TL8273).  Most were flying low to the ground and in short bursts.  When the sun came out they were more active and on one occasion a chase involving 3 butterflies was seen.  Of note, there is very little Birds-foot Trefoil in flower and those Dingy Skippers seen nectaring were on Ground Ivy, Bugle and Dandelion.  Hopefully, if the weather holds then the survey on the 14th could produce a decent count.  A good number of other species were also on the wing- Small Copper, Small Heath, Green Hairsteak, Peacock, Brimstone, Orange-tip, Large White, Green-veined White and Speckled Wood - It actually became my first double figure species day count of 2014 Kings Forest TL8373 and TL8273 Bill Stone
